Timothy T. Goodnow, Ph.D.
President & CEO

Dr. Goodnow joined the SMSI Board of Directors in December 2010 and on March 1, 2011 became President & CEO of SMSI. Dr. Goodnow was most recently with Abbott Diabetes Care where he was the Vice President, Technical Operations. Prior to that, he held positions at TheraSense, Verax Biomedical, Dade Behring and Baxter Healthcare. Dr. Goodnow has led the successful development of a number of FDA approved glucose monitoring systems and insulin pumps. He holds a Ph.D. and B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Miami. top


Todd Whitehurst, MD
Vice President of Product Development

Prior to joining SMSI, Dr. Whitehurst was the VP of R&D at Palyon Corp for 2 years, where he led the effort to develop and produce a next-generation implantable drug infusion pump for the treatment of chronic pain and spasticity. He served as Director and VP of Emerging Indications from 2002 to 2009 at Boston Scientific Neuromodulation (formerly part of Advanced Bionics Corporation), where he led the research, development, and evaluation of new technologies for neuromodulation, including the Bion microstimulator. Prior to that, he worked for over a decade as an electrical engineer and software engineer in the R&D departments of several medical device companies, including Advanced Bionics and SRI International. He holds an MD from UCSF, an MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) from UC-Berkeley, and a BE in EECS from Vanderbilt University. top


Arthur E. Colvin
Senior Scientist

Mr. Colvin has served as Senior Scientist of SMSI since its inception in January 1997. Mr. Colvin is the inventor of the Company's core technology, and owner of the corresponding U.S. patent. Before founding SMSI, Mr. Colvin founded and served as President of Cerex, a private company that developed products for the fermentation market and provided contract engineering and manufacturing services. Prior to Cerex, Mr. Colvin was a staff scientist and process development engineer for Life Technologies, Inc., where he was involved in new product development.

Mr. Colvin has developed or led the development of more than 50 products for the biotechnology and food industries. He has more than 30 issued and pending patents. top


Steven J. Walters
Director of Operations

Mr. Walters has been Director of Operations of SMSI since May 2001. He is responsible for production and quality operations of the company, including its commercially available oxygen sensor for which his team has implemented a high volume production process. Prior to joining SMSI, he was Director of Operations for Dye Magnet Industries (DMI), a consumer product company, where he helped commercialize a new product. He also participated in the sale of the company to consumer product giant Reckitt Benckiser. Before joining DMI, Mr. Walters was President of Larox Inc., a Finnish owned capital equipment manufacturer. He oversaw the growth of this company for more than 15 years with expansions in the USA, Canada and Mexico. top


M. James Barrett, Ph.D.
Founder

Dr. Barrett is Founder of Sensors for Medicine and Science, Inc.® (SMSI®). He is currently a General Partner with the venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates. In 1987, he founded Genetic Therapy, Inc. (GTI) which was sold in August of 1995 to Swiss pharmaceutical giant Sandoz AG (now Novartis) for $300 million. He continued to serve as GTI's CEO and as a Director through June 1996. He founded SMSI in 1997.

From 1982 to July of 1987, Dr. Barrett served as President of Life Technologies, Inc. (now part of Invitrogen) and its predecessor, Bethesda Research Laboratories. Prior to 1982, he was employed at SmithKline Beecham Corporation for 13 years, where he held a variety of positions, including President of its In Vitro Diagnostics Division and President of SmithKline Clinical Laboratories. Dr. Barrett has been a Director of MedImmune, Inc. since 1988. top
