A product made possible by SMSI's®
oxygen sensor technology is a handheld device that measures
a person's metabolic rate. Metabolic rate, or how many
calories a person burns each day, may be determined
by measuring the amount of oxygen consumed through breathing.
This device was developed and commercialized by a medical
device company in partnership with SMSI.
National Institutes of Health statistics
indicate that an estimated 61% of the U.S. population
is overweight or obese. In fact, 45 million Americans
are actively dieting - creating a $40 billion diet market
in the United States. Diet and weight loss programs
would benefit substantially from the ability to assess
a person's unique and changing daily calorie usage.
Previous metabolic monitors were
large, hospital-based units, too expensive to be widely
available. As a result, daily calorie consumption is
generally estimated based on an individual's sex, height,
age, and weight. As such, these estimates are often
inaccurate. For example, studies have shown that 20%
of patients in hospitals and 40% of patients in long-term
care facilities are malnourished.
By virtue of its ability to measure
oxygen breath-by-breath in real-time, the SMSI oxygen
sensor enables accurate estimation of individual daily
calorie requirements. This diagnostic breakthrough should
improve outcomes through tailored treatment and fitness
programs. Nutritionists and fitness professionals have
received the device enthusiastically.
